Poverty mom and two childrenA note from Jim:

When I started this site in November of 2010, my original purpose was to make it a site for ordinary Americans to tell the story of how the economy has effected their lives. It was meant to be non-political.

However, as newly elected republican state governments around the country moved to blame the hard working ordinary citizens of their states for the budget problems of their state, I could no longer remain silent.

I am a proud, progressive, liberal independent who believes that America is better off when all Americans share fairly in the great bounty of this country.

As a liberal I believe in small government. Government should not be sticking its nose in my bedroom or telling my daughters the choices they have in their medical decisions. I do, however, expect the government to protect me from criminals, whether those criminals commit their crimes in alleys or board rooms. Whether those criminals are muggers, small time con-artists, or big time bankers.

Social Security Cuts? PDF Print E-mail

Today's news contained a story about President Obama proposing a budget that includes cuts to Social Security just so he could get increased revenues from closing tax loop-holes. This proposal is disappointing to those of us who expected the President to stand strong for working Americans who have paid into the system all their lives and expect to receive the benefits that they have paid for. Some people see this as Obama caving into the demands of the Republicans just so he can get a budget deal. Others see this as Obama playing three dimensional chess, knowing the Republicans will never agree to anything he offers them, even if it's everything they want.

But Republicans should remember what Ronald Reagan said about Social Security in a debate with Walter Mondale in 1984. And Obama should use Reagan's words against them every chance he gets. Cutting Social Security is not the way to win votes, defending it is. Please watch the video and pass it on to all of your Republican friends.

Change in China PDF Print E-mail

As many of you may know, there has been a change in leadership in China. China now has a new President and Premiere. The new president has made some fine speeches about tackling the growing corruption in China and bringing China back into line with "national interests". That's only one of the terms I heard on the reports I listened to on the radio over the weekend. As I listened to these reports of what the new leadership said in their speeches I couldn't help think to myself that if I were the CEO of any US company doing business today in China I would be scared shitless. And, I would be willing to bet real money that after what I, and the CEO's of the numerous companies that have sent US jobs to China, that those same CEO's are scrambling their troupes to come up with contingency plans to move production to other places. Maybe even back to the US. I think things are about to get very interesting. I promise you that this is a development that I'm going to keep a very close watch on. Stay tuned, there is more to come.

The Second Amendment

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

This is the second amendment, word-for-word, straight from the Constitution of the United States. You’ll notice that it is only one sentence long, a total of 27 words. And yet, these 27 words have and continue to cause great contention within this country. Why is that? It’s because everyone is focused on only one half of the amendment.

The Fiscal Cliff and Social Security PDF Print E-mail

Even though Barack Obama won a second term by a large majority the republicans are still fighting for their agenda to cut social security. They call it an entitlement as if those of us who receive these benefits don't deserve them. I am entitled to these benefits because I paid for them throughout my entire working life. Republicans would have us believe that we need to cut social security in order to reduce the deficit, that's a lie. Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. Social security is entirely paid for by the payroll tax. Even Ronald Reagan, the iconic republican president understood this. Watch his comments from 1984.
